A trip to the south end of Kodiak Island

For the past week and a half I was down on the south end of Kodiak Island to help my friend Patrick with his spring archaeological site survey work. We kayaked Deadman Bay and hiked up the outside of the Aliulik Peninsula looking for prehistoric Native settlement sites. We found a lot, which is common in Kodiak which has been inhabited for the past 7,000 years. We weren't doing any excavations, just identifying those locations with human activity, typically in the form of house pits and middens. I'm normally not excited about camping this early in the spring as it's chilly and the weather can be unsettled, but a nice pyramid tent and a wood stove make it quite survivable.

The whole album is here, and below are a few sample images.
